All of my boxes are made entirely of wood, including the hinges and fasteners. The box in this photo is made of Wild Tamarind with Pao Amarillo trays and drawers. The construction features exposed dowel joinery, where wood dowels and glue are used instead of nails or screws.

Each box has a lid stop, so that the lid can be raised to just past vertical, then it will stay in that position until closed. The trays and drawer sides have finger joints (also known as box joints). The drawers each have a dovetailed wooden slide that runs in a dovetailed slot on the upper surface of the box bottom. This allows the drawers to slide in and out with incredible ease, without tipping or wobbling.
The inside bottom of each box, tray, and drawer is lined with black velvet upholstery fabric.
The boxes are made in my shop in Asheville, North Carolina. I do the work myself, with occasional help from a part time assistant. Evan, my assistant for several years, is back from college and helping make boxes again. He also will be along to help out at some of my shows.
Most of the interior components, such as trays, drawers, partitions, and drawer sides are made by my friend, Gary, at his shop in Morristown, Tennessee. If a woman answers the phone when you call, that will be my wife, Linda.
Please bear in mind while browsing my website that photographs only tell part of the story. My boxes are are very tactile, they are very pleasing to the touch. This is due to careful sanding, hand rubbing of finishing oils, and buffing of the final finish. Also, the wooden hinges provide a very smooth action, the lid feels very substantial, and the lid-stop mechanism has a counterbalanced feel.
When visitors to my display at craft shows ask if they are allowed to touch, I encourage them to do so. I go to great lengths to make my work appealing to the touch, and if it is not touched then that effort cannot be appreciated. Those of you have seen and touched my work will know what I am trying to describe, those who haven't will be in for a pleasant surprise!
