Fine Wood Boxes
Halfmoon Boxes
I call this design "Halfmoon" boxes. Viewed from the side they are almost semicircular, hence the name. Each has drawers that run on dovetail slides. The drawer sides are made of Spanish cedar, for the wonderful aroma, and each drawer is individually shaped to fit the inside contours of the box body. The bottom of each drawer is lined with black velvet. To see current inventory and purchase from Ariel Gallery, click here. Mendocino Moon
Mendocino Moon is one of the largest halfmoon boxes I have ever made, it is 18" tall, 7.5" wide and 13.5" deep. The primary wood is curly redwood. It came from a log that was cut down in the 1960's by a man who was going to split it into railroad ties and grape stakes. But, after felling the tree he realized it had curly grain and was unsuitable for splitting. He left the log lying on the ground, and almost a half century later his grandson decided to salvage it. The bark and sapwood had rotted away by then, but the heartwood was mostly intact. The grandson sawed the log into slabs and sold two of them to me. The tree grew in Mendocino County in northern California, just a few miles from the town where I was born. The pulls are made of claro walnut burl, also from California. Mendocino Moon has been sold, but I have more of this wood and could make another...
